Scientific applied activities
Institute prepares recommendations, law projects, carries out expertises, gives advise for forest practise. Applied research and scientific applied activities are carried according agreements with state institutions, forest enterprises and other economy subjects or physical persons.
43 projects funded from Lithuanian economy subjects, state government institutions and other sources were carried in 2003.
They include various recommendations for the forestry practice (oak reforestation; forest fire protection; biodiversity conservation; optimisation of final cutting; seed stands restoration and usage; nursery establishment and modernisation; nursery irrigation and soil fertilisation, reforestation on very entrophic temporary overmoistured mineral soils, regulation of the game populations, seed orchards in greenhouses, profitability improvement in the forest enterprises and etc.
Research plots
More than 500 permanent research plots of LFRI are established in Lithuanian forests (the majority of them are in Dubrava experimental & training forest enterprise). Those plots are designed for forest ecosystem, forest ecosystem regeneration, stands thinning and final cutting studies and include progeny testing plantations, seed orchards, clonal archives, plantations with different initial density, ecosystem monitoring plots and etc.
LFRI has 5 research stations: Birzai, Kursiu nerija, Labanoras, Plateliai, Varena.
PhD studies
There are PhD studies in the field of forestry (together with Lithuanian Agricultural University) and ecological and environmental (together with Vytautas Magnus University). Currently, there are 20 PhD students at the Institute.
Library
The library of the Institute is specialised in forestry. Fund of special forestry literature is the richest in Lithuania (more than 60 thous. units) and is accessible not only to the personnel of the institute, but also to the students, teachers and scientists from other research and education institutions.
